The Guardians 2 4K disc is not as dazzling with its resolution as it is with its HDR and Wide Color features - a situation not helped, I guess, by its use of a huge number of effects shots that were presumably rendered in 2K, and it only receiving a 2K Digital Intermediate for its cinematic release. It’s just that every last frame of the 4K HDR image is so exponentially superior in its color saturations, contrast and brightness that once you’ve seen it, SDR is essentially ruined for you. On the contrary, it’s clean, detailed for HD, and benefits from as much contrast as standard dynamic range video can reasonably be expected to deliver. That isn’t to say the Blu-ray is actually bad. It was just a miserable, lifeless experience that robbed the film of much of its character and fun.

Really heavy duty, non-prescription sunglasses. Honestly, trying to watch the ordinary Blu-ray after having my retinas transported to whatever crazy place the 4K Blu-ray transports them to feel like I was watching the film with sunglasses on. The film gleefully sports one of the most explosive and rich color palettes of any non-animated film I’ve ever seen, and the 4K Blu-ray delivers this with a joyous level of vibrancy and punch that leaves the HD Blu-ray looking pitifully flat and lifeless by comparison.

The star of the show is the 4K disc’s stunning combination of high dynamic range and wide color technologies.
